A detailed Mughal miniature painting by Govardhan, capturing a dynamic hunting scene with various animals in motion.
This Mughal miniature painting, attributed to the court artist Govardhan, depicts a dynamic hunting scene set within a stylised natural environment. The composition is organised to show the chaotic movement of animals in flight, contrasted with the deliberate actions of the hunters positioned at the upper edges of the frame. A cheetah, wearing a collar, is shown in the act of bringing down an antelope, while other deer and a hare scatter across the grassy terrain. The artist employs a high vantage point, typical of the period, which allows for the clear observation of each animal and figure across the pictorial plane.
Govardhan was a prominent painter during the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. His work is recognised for its attention to individual character and the precise rendering of animal anatomy. The palette consists of soft greens, earthy browns, and muted ochres, which provide a neutral backdrop for the varied coats of the wildlife. The figures of the hunters are dressed in traditional Mughal attire, their postures suggesting a sense of urgency that matches the fleeing animals. The painting is framed by a decorative border, a common feature in manuscripts of the seventeenth century, which serves to contain the action within the rectangular format.
This piece demonstrates the technical skill required to balance multiple figures and animals without overcrowding the space. The use of fine brushwork is evident in the depiction of the animals' fur and the subtle shading of the rocky outcrops in the background. As a representative example of Mughal court art, this work provides insight into the themes of royal sport and the observation of nature that occupied the artists of the imperial workshops. The signature of Govardhan is visible in the lower right corner, confirming his authorship of this detailed study.
