Yokoi Kinkoku
Yokoi Kinkoku spent a portion of his life as a wandering monk of the Jodo sect, travelling across Japan to solicit funds for temple repairs. This itinerant lifestyle allowed him to observe the topography of the country, which he later recorded in his ink paintings. He often carried his brushes and paper in a portable kit, documenting his encounters with rural shrines and mountain passes during his long journeys.
Biography
His artistic method relied on a sense of spontaneity. Unlike the rigid training of the Kano school, Kinkoku favoured a loose application of ink. He used rapid brushstrokes to define the structure of his subjects, such as in Mount Emei or his depictions of Mount Fuji. His work possesses a distinct lack of polish, which stems from his preference for raw expression over technical perfection. He often added humorous inscriptions to his paintings, providing a glimpse into his personal temperament.
Modern collectors value Kinkoku for the directness of his compositions. His prints bring a sense of quiet observation to a living space. The unrefined quality of his lines offers an alternative to the highly calculated aesthetics found in other Japanese woodblock prints.
