Unkoku Tōgan

  • Unkoku school

Unkoku Tōgan began his life as a samurai under the Mori clan before turning to painting. He became so obsessed with the 15th-century master Sesshū Tōyō that he fought a legal battle for the right to be called his artistic successor. After winning the dispute, he moved into Sesshū's former studio, the Unkoku-an, and adopted the Unkoku name.

Biography

His work focuses on the suiboku-ga tradition of ink wash painting. Tōgan used sharp, angular brushstrokes to define mountains and figures. This technique is seen in his Portrait of Daruma and Landscape of the Four Seasons. He avoided the soft, decorative styles of the contemporary Kano school. Instead, he used grey washes and stark black ink to create space and depth on paper and silk.

Collectors today value these prints for their minimalist aesthetic and calm atmosphere. The ink compositions, such as the Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang, provide a sense of quiet focus. These works fit well in modern interiors that prioritise clean lines and natural materials. The historical connection to Zen Buddhist subjects adds a layer of contemplation to any room.
