Quirin Mark

Quirin Mark spent much of his career in Vienna, where he moved from his native Littau. He became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts after studying with Jakob Schmutzer. While many know him for his portraits of the Habsburg family, he also produced detailed historical scenes. His work often involved translating the paintings of other masters into copperplate engravings, a task that required a high degree of technical skill.

Biography

Mark adopted the Neoclassical style popular during the late 18th century. His technique involved a combination of line engraving and stipple to create soft transitions in skin tones and fabric. In works like Amorous Miser and Venus and Cupid Sleeping, he focused on balanced compositions and clear outlines. He avoided excessive ornamentation, preferring instead to let the narrative of the scene speak through the poses of his figures.

These prints appeal to those who appreciate the clarity of the Neoclassical era. The subject matter ranges from Greek philosophy to biblical history, providing a sense of intellectual depth. Because his prints are monochromatic, they work well in modern spaces that require a sophisticated touch without clashing with a room's colour palette. Mark's ability to capture light on paper makes these pieces a choice for collectors of classical art.
