Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy

For decades, art historians debated the origins of many works now attributed to Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy. His paintings were frequently mistaken for those of Thomas de Keyser or Werner van den Valckert. One notable piece, a portrait of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, was completed around 1633. This was the same physician who later became the subject of a famous anatomy lesson by Rembrandt. Pickenoy was the preferred painter for the ruling class of Amsterdam before Rembrandt arrived in the city.

Biography

Pickenoy specialised in large group portraits and formal individual likenesses. His approach relied on a sober, direct realism that avoided unnecessary drama. He often added small numbers and names in the corners of his compositions to identify the sitters. In his 1619 work, The Osteology Lesson of Dr Sebastiaen Egbertsz, he depicted a group of surgeons gathered around a skeleton. His technique focused on the precise rendering of black silk and stiff white lace collars, which were the fashion of the Dutch elite.

Modern collectors appreciate Pickenoy for his objective documentation of the Dutch Golden Age. His work provides a clear view of seventeenth-century society without the heavy shadows used by his contemporaries. These portraits offer a sense of historical weight and stability to a room. The monochrome colour schemes of his subjects make these prints easy to integrate into a variety of home decor styles.
