Matthieu van Plattenberg
Matthieu van Plattenberg began his career in Antwerp before moving to Paris, where he adopted the name Matthieu de Platte-Montagne. This change helped him integrate into the French artistic circles of the mid-seventeenth century. While many of his contemporaries focused on calm harbours, Plattenberg specialised in the violent motion of the sea. He worked with the painter Jacques Fouquières and focused on the technical details of naval architecture.

His work is defined by the depiction of atmospheric turbulence. In paintings such as Ship in a Storm, he uses a limited palette of greys and muted greens to suggest the weight of water. He often placed ships at precarious angles to suggest immediate danger. His compositions avoid static arrangements.
