Manohar

Manohar began his career in the royal workshops of the Mughal Emperor Akbar as a teenager. He was the son of the master painter Basawan, yet he developed a style that favoured formal order over his father's more energetic compositions. One of his most unusual habits was including his own likeness in large court scenes. This self-insertion suggests a high level of self-awareness and status within the imperial atelier.

Biography

His work is defined by a clinical precision in portraiture. Manohar often painted Emperor Jahangir and his court with a focus on individual features and specific attire. He utilised expensive minerals to create deep blues and greens. His compositions are often symmetrical. This structure gives his paintings a sense of calm and permanence. He avoided the chaotic movement seen in earlier Mughal art, preferring to record the quiet dignity of royal life.

Modern collectors appreciate the technical discipline found in these small-scale works. The level of detail in a Manohar print allows for close inspection. These pieces provide a sense of historical context without being visually overwhelming. The use of gold and mineral tones fits well with contemporary decor. His paintings offer a quiet sophistication for any room.
