Liu Guosong
Liu Guosong rejected the traditional Chinese brush to create his own tools. He developed a special coarse-fibre paper, now known as Liu Guosong paper. By physically pulling the thick fibres from the surface after applying ink, he created white, jagged lines that mimic snow or lightning. This tactile method moved ink painting away from calligraphy and towards a more physical, experimental process.
Biography
As a leader of the Fifth Moon Group, Liu combined Western abstraction with Eastern materials. His Space Series began after he saw photographs of Earth from the Apollo 8 mission. These works use circular forms and stark contrasts to depict the moon and planetary bodies. He often used a technique called 'steeping ink,' where he applied pigment to both sides of the paper to build depth without using traditional shading.
Collectors value Liu's work for its clean, graphic quality. His compositions often focus on large, singular shapes and stark white spaces. These prints suit contemporary homes because they offer a sense of scale and quiet energy.
