John Johnston

John Johnston was a soldier before he was a professional painter. He served as a captain in the Continental Army and sustained a wound at the Battle of Long Island in 1776. This military experience defined his social circle in Boston. He later received many commissions from fellow officers and members of the Society of the Cincinnati. His work provides a direct record of the men who participated in the American Revolution.

Biography

His artistic approach was shaped by his apprenticeship under John Singleton Copley. Johnston adopted a Neoclassical style that prioritised clarity and restraint. He avoided the soft, painterly flourishes common in European art of the time. Instead, he used a sober colour palette and sharp outlines. His portraits are known for their honest depiction of character and their focus on the specific details of 18th-century dress.

Modern collectors value Johnston for his historical authenticity. His portraits lack the heavy ornamentation of later Victorian art, making them suitable for minimalist or traditional spaces. The prints offer a sense of gravity and quiet dignity. They are ideal for those who want to include a piece of early American history in their decor without relying on overly sentimental imagery.
