The Lutma family helped define the Auricular style, known in Dutch as Kwabstijl. This style uses organic shapes that resemble human ears or fluid sea life. Their prints often show cartouches and frames with these fleshy, melting forms. These designs were originally meant for silver basins and ewers. The younger Lutma also produced portraits of Dutch figures such as the poet Joost van den Vondel.

Modern collectors appreciate these prints for their abstract qualities. The Kwabstijl designs look contemporary because they focus on form and shadow rather than literal scenes. These works provide a link to the craft traditions of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. They work well in minimalist spaces.
