Johann Baptist Scheffer
Johann Baptist Scheffer spent much of his career as an itinerant painter, moving between German and Dutch cities to find commissions. He eventually settled in Dordrecht and later Amsterdam, where he became a court painter to Louis Bonaparte. His sudden death in 1809 left his family in a difficult position. This event forced his widow, Cornelia Lamme, to move their children to Paris. This move allowed his son, Ary Scheffer, to become a major figure in the Romantic movement.
