Hans Weiditz
Hans Weiditz was often unidentified by his contemporaries. For centuries, scholars knew him only as the Petrarch Master because of his woodcuts for a German edition of Petrarch's writings. He worked primarily in Augsburg and Strasbourg during the early sixteenth century. Unlike many of his peers, he did not always sign his blocks. This anonymity meant his contribution to the development of the German woodcut was recognised much later than that of his colleague Albrecht Dürer.

Biography
His approach was defined by a refusal to idealise his subjects. When illustrating botanical texts, he insisted on drawing from actual specimens. He included broken stems and insect damage in his woodcuts. This focus on observation extended to his secular scenes. His depictions of medical procedures, such as a surgeon cutting off a leg, contain a blunt honesty. He used strong lines to define form. His compositions often focus on the physical weight of objects and figures.
Modern collectors value the graphic clarity of his work. His prints offer a direct window into Renaissance life and science. The botanical studies are particularly popular for their clean, observational style. They suit contemporary interiors that favour natural history or minimalist aesthetics. His work provides a connection to the origins of scientific illustration. Each print carries the authority of a first-hand account of the natural world.
