Egbert van der Poel

  • Dutch Golden Age painting

Egbert van der Poel was born in 1621, part of the same generation as the Amsterdam artist Gerbrand van den Eeckhout. His life changed in 1654 when a gunpowder magazine in Delft exploded, destroying a large portion of the city. Van der Poel was present during the event and lost a daughter in the catastrophe. This trauma defined his later career. He produced numerous paintings of the explosion and its ruins. These works recorded the physical destruction of his home city with a stark, documentary quality.

Biography

His artistic output focused on nocturnal scenes and the effects of artificial light. He became a specialist in painting fires, known as brandjes. These compositions use the glow of flames or lanterns to pierce through heavy shadows. In works like Vismarkt bij avond, small candles or torches provide the only illumination. He focused on the way light reflects off surfaces like damp stone or fish scales. This approach created a sense of quiet drama within ordinary urban settings.

His paintings appeal to collectors who value atmosphere over bright colours. The dark palettes and controlled lighting make these prints suitable for rooms with a moody or classic aesthetic. They provide a window into the reality of the Dutch Golden Age. His work captures the tension between the safety of the home and the danger of the night. These scenes remain compelling because they represent a specific historical moment through a personal lens.
