Coenraed Lauwers

Coenraed Lauwers began his career in the shadow of his father, Nicolaes Lauwers, within the competitive artistic environment of Antwerp. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1660, where he specialised in the dominant Flemish style. While many engravers of the period stayed within their local markets, Lauwers spent significant time in Paris. This international experience allowed him to refine his technique and broaden the reach of Flemish compositions beyond the artistic centre of Antwerp.

Biography

His approach relied on the disciplined use of the burin to create depth and texture. Lauwers concentrated on the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, adapting their expansive oil paintings into the linear medium of engraving. He used varying line weights to simulate the fall of light on silk or the musculature of a figure. This method ensured that the energy of the original painting remained intact even in a monochrome format.

Modern collectors value these prints for their formal clarity and historical weight. The absence of colour allows the dramatic compositions of the Baroque era to integrate easily into contemporary decor. These works provide a direct link to the grand traditions of the seventeenth century while maintaining a clean, graphic aesthetic. They are ideal for those who appreciate the technical skill involved in manual printmaking.
