Charles David

Charles David was a seventeenth-century French engraver who worked during the reign of Louis XIII. While many artists of his time sought fame through painting, David specialised in the technical art of the burin. He is particularly noted for his documentation of the funeral ceremonies of the French nobility. These prints recorded the catafalques and temporary monuments designed by court architects. His records are often the only surviving evidence of these massive, temporary structures.

Biography

His style is defined by a heavy, sculptural line that gives his figures a sense of physical weight. In his series on the Labours of Hercules, he used precise cross-hatching to define musculature and anatomy. He avoided the loose, sketchy quality of contemporary etchings in favour of a more rigid, formal approach. This method allowed him to capture the textures of stone and metal with great clarity. His compositions remain strictly organised and often follow the principles of classical symmetry.

Modern collectors appreciate the clean, graphic nature of his work. The absence of unnecessary ornamentation allows the underlying structure of his subjects to remain visible. These prints suit minimalist or traditional spaces where a sense of history is desired without excessive detail. His prints of monuments and mythological figures provide a calm, steady presence. They represent a period when technical skill and historical documentation were inseparable.
