Benjamin Blyth

Benjamin Blyth operated out of a studio in Salem, Massachusetts, during the late eighteenth century. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on oil painting, Blyth specialised in the medium of pastel. He often worked on paper or parchment, creating portraits for the merchant families of New England. His career took an unusual turn when he relocated to Virginia in the 1780s, after which his professional activities became harder for historians to track.

Biography

His artistic style is defined by a soft, chalky application of colour. Blyth had a talent for capturing the stiff, formal posture expected of colonial subjects while maintaining a sense of individual character. The portraits of Ezekiel Hersey demonstrate his ability to render textiles and skin tones with a delicate touch. His compositions are often sparse, focusing the viewer on the sitter's face and attire.

Modern collectors are often drawn to the historical honesty of Blyth's work. The available X-radiographs of his portraits, such as "Woman and Child" and "Portrait of a Man", provide a unique view of his technical process and the underlying structure of his compositions. These scientific images offer a minimalist aesthetic that fits well in contemporary interiors. His original pastel works provide a connection to the early American portrait tradition through a less common medium.
