Angelo Campanella

Campanella was a student of the master engraver Giovanni Volpato. He was tasked with documenting the frescoes of the Vatican and the Villa Farnesina. One of his most significant projects involved collaborating with the Scottish painter and archaeologist Gavin Hamilton. Together, they produced plates for the Schola Italica Picturae. This massive undertaking sought to record the finest examples of Italian painting for a wider European audience.

Biography

His technical skill allowed him to translate the soft transitions of oil paint into the precise lines of copperplate engraving. In works like Modesta e Vanità, he captured the subtle expressions and drapery of the original compositions with clarity. Campanella focused on the balance of light and shadow. He used varied hatching techniques to suggest volume and texture without the use of colour. This disciplined approach defined the Neoclassical aesthetic of the late eighteenth century.

Modern collectors value these prints for their architectural quality and historical accuracy. They function as windows into the private collections and public monuments of Rome during the Enlightenment. The monochrome palette of his engravings fits well in contemporary interiors that favour clean lines and classical subjects. His depictions of figures like Terpandro and Pindaro provide a sense of historical continuity. These works are a sophisticated alternative to modern posters.
