The Zouaves were a military unit recruited from various Catholic nations to defend the Papal States during the mid-nineteenth century. The figure stands in a formal pose, wearing the distinctive uniform of the regiment, which included a short jacket, a sash, and loose-fitting trousers. The text above the figure, 'Bagnorea', refers to the location of a skirmish involving the Papal Zouaves in 1867.
The print is executed with the precise line work characteristic of nineteenth-century commercial engraving. The artist employs cross-hatching to define the folds of the uniform and the texture of the ground. The background is kept minimal, focusing the viewer's attention on the subject.
