A delicate woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting a woman at a loom, showcasing the refined aesthetic of the nishiki-e period.
Suzuki Harunobu was a central figure in the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in Japanese woodblock printing. This work depicts a woman engaged in the act of weaving, a common domestic scene within the ukiyo-e tradition. The composition focuses on the figure, whose posture is slightly inclined as she attends to the loom. Harunobu is known for his slender, ethereal figures, and this print reflects that aesthetic choice.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the paper texture. The lines are fine and controlled, defining the folds of the kimono and the structure of the loom with precision. Unlike later, more crowded compositions, this print maintains a sense of space, allowing the viewer to focus on the quiet concentration of the subject. The loom itself is rendered with simple, geometric lines, providing a contrast to the organic curves of the woman's form.
Harunobu often depicted women in various states of daily life, ranging from domestic chores to leisure activities. These prints were popular among the urban population of Edo, offering glimpses into both idealised and realistic settings. The technical innovation of the period allowed artists to achieve subtle gradations and a wider range of pigments, which is evident in the delicate application of colour here. This print provides a clear example of the artist's ability to balance human form with functional objects, creating a harmonious visual narrative. The work remains a representative example of the mid-eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, capturing a moment of stillness and industry.
