A 1915 study by Egon Schiele featuring two figures in an angular embrace, rendered with expressive line work and selective colour.
Egon Schiele produced this work in 1915, a period during which his draughtsmanship reached a high level of technical control. The composition features two figures locked in a tight, angular embrace. Schiele employs his characteristic line work, which is both jagged and precise, to define the contours of the bodies against the negative space of the paper. The figures are rendered with a sense of nervous energy, typical of his approach to the human form.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted skin tones and earthy washes, which are punctuated by the sharp, saturated red of the fabric draped around the lower figure. This contrast draws the eye to the centre of the interaction, where the hands and limbs intertwine. Schiele avoids traditional anatomical proportions, opting instead for a distorted perspective that communicates psychological tension. The faces are marked by heavy, dark outlines and expressive features, conveying an interiority that is common in his portraiture.
This piece demonstrates Schiele's ability to balance graphic clarity with emotional weight. The use of gouache and watercolour allows for subtle layering, while the black crayon provides the necessary structure to hold the composition together. The work is signed and dated in the lower right, a standard practice for the artist during this phase of his career. It remains a representative example of his output from the mid-1910s, reflecting his preoccupation with the human condition and the physical reality of his subjects.
