Lin Liang was a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, recognised for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre. This work displays his characteristic approach to ink wash techniques, where he balances precise observation with a fluid, expressive application of ink. The composition features two hawks perched upon a gnarled branch, surrounded by bamboo and foliage.

Lin Liang moved away from the highly decorative, colourful styles favoured by some of his contemporaries. Instead, he utilised a more restrained palette, relying on the tonal variations of ink to define form and texture. The feathers of the hawks are rendered with quick, decisive brushstrokes that suggest both softness and strength.
