An architectural study by Walter Gropius for the 1927 Total Theater project, featuring a geometric dome structure and mechanical stage elements.
This architectural study by Walter Gropius represents a component of the Total Theater project, a collaboration with the theatre director Erwin Piscator. Conceived in 1927, the project aimed to revolutionise the theatrical experience by creating a flexible space that could adapt to various staging requirements. The design features a dome structure, depicted here through a geometric network of lines, intended to house a versatile stage system.
The drawing employs a precise, technical aesthetic characteristic of the Bauhaus approach. Gropius uses a restrained colour palette to distinguish the functional elements of the theatre. The dome structure is rendered in a pale blue wash, while the hanging stage and circular rings are highlighted in yellow and red. These primary colours serve a clear analytical purpose, allowing the viewer to identify the mechanical components of the proposed structure against the neutral background of the paper.
As an architectural document, the work demonstrates the focus on functionalism and industrial efficiency that defined Gropius's career. The composition is sparse, prioritising clarity over decorative detail. By isolating the dome and the internal rings, Gropius communicates the spatial logic of the theatre without the need for complex perspective or shading. The drawing remains a record of a radical vision for performance space, where the architecture itself becomes an active participant in the production. It reflects the period's interest in modular design and the application of engineering principles to cultural institutions. The work is held in the archives of the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin, documenting the rigorous planning process behind one of the most ambitious unbuilt projects of the twentieth century.
