A portrait of the architect Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo, painted by Francisco de Goya in 1820, featuring a restrained palette and expressive brushwork.
Painted in 1820, this portrait depicts the Spanish architect Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo. Goya captures the subject in a three-quarter view, set against a dark, atmospheric background that is characteristic of his later works. The sitter is shown with his arms crossed, a pose that suggests a sense of composure and self-assurance. His attire consists of a dark waistcoat over a white shirt, with the fabric rendered in loose, expressive brushstrokes that define the form without relying on excessive detail.
The palette is restrained, dominated by deep blacks, greys, and muted tones, which serve to focus the viewer's attention on the face of the architect. Goya uses light to model the features of the sitter, creating a subtle contrast between the illuminated face and the shadowed surroundings. The paint application is fluid and direct, demonstrating the artist's mature style, where economy of line and tone conveys the character of the individual.
Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo was a contemporary of Goya, and this work reflects the artist's ability to capture the personality of his subjects through a psychological lens. The lack of elaborate props or background scenery ensures that the focus remains entirely on the human presence. The signature and date are visible in the lower left corner, confirming the period of the work. This portrait offers a clear example of Goya's approach to portraiture during his later years in Madrid, where he moved away from the formal constraints of court painting toward a more personal and direct mode of expression. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
