A 16th-century Mughal miniature from the Tuti-nama, depicting a royal court scene with fine detail and gold accents.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript produced during the early Mughal period. The work depicts a narrative scene where a young prince addresses his father, the king, within a courtly setting. The composition employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, which allows for the clear arrangement of figures and architectural elements across the pictorial plane.
The artist, Suraju, utilises a palette of mineral pigments and gold to define the figures and their surroundings. The king is positioned on a raised dais, draped in an orange robe, while the prince stands before him in a gesture of communication. Surrounding them are courtiers and attendants, their postures and expressions contributing to the narrative tension of the scene. A female figure is visible in an arched alcove in the background, adding depth to the interior space.
The geometric patterns on the floor and the intricate textile designs on the clothing demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Mughal imperial workshops. The text block at the bottom of the page provides the necessary literary context for the image, linking the visual representation to the oral tradition of the Tuti-nama. This manuscript is a primary example of the synthesis between Persian artistic traditions and the emerging Mughal style, which prioritised narrative clarity and decorative detail. The use of gold leaf and saturated colours creates a sense of opulence, reflecting the status of the royal court for which the manuscript was commissioned. The work remains a valuable record of the aesthetic and cultural priorities of the mid-sixteenth-century Mughal court, offering insight into the methods of manuscript production and the integration of text and image.
