A detailed sixteenth-century drawing by Dirck Vellert depicting the biblical rescue of Saint Peter, rendered in ink and wash on prepared paper.
This drawing by Dirck Vellert depicts the biblical account of Christ saving Saint Peter from the Sea of Galilee. Executed in 1523, the work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Antwerp school during the early sixteenth century. Vellert utilised a grey prepared paper as a base, applying pen and brown ink alongside grey wash to establish form and shadow. The application of white heightening provides the necessary contrast to define the figures and the turbulent water, creating a sense of volume within the composition.
The narrative focus rests upon the interaction between the two figures in the foreground. Christ stands firmly, reaching out to grasp the hand of the sinking Peter, who is shown in a posture of supplication. Behind them, a ship is rendered with careful attention to its rigging and structure, providing a sense of scale and context to the miraculous event. The artist employs a calligraphic line quality, particularly evident in the rendering of the waves and the drapery of the garments. This approach allows for a dynamic sense of movement, reflecting the instability of the sea.
Vellert was a master of the small-scale drawing and stained glass design, and this piece reflects his ability to manage complex narratives within a confined space. The use of white heightening on a dark ground was a common practice among Northern Renaissance artists, allowing for a dramatic play of light that directs the viewer's eye toward the central gesture of salvation. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining human emotion with theological subject matter, presented through a sophisticated command of graphic media.
