A detailed ink and wash drawing by Lancelot Blondeel depicting the rescue of Saint Donatian, showcasing the technical precision of the Northern Renaissance.
This drawing depicts the legendary rescue of Saint Donatian from the waters of the river Tiber. Lancelot Blondeel, a prominent figure in the Bruges art scene during the sixteenth century, employs a characteristic Northern Renaissance approach to narrative composition. The scene is structured around the central act of salvation, where figures reach into the water to pull the saint to safety. The inclusion of the wheel, a traditional attribute associated with the saint, provides a specific iconographic marker within the composition.
Blondeel demonstrates a mastery of ink wash techniques, using varying densities of brown pigment to establish depth and volume. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity and expressive gesture, typical of the period. The background features a bridge and a cluster of onlookers, which adds a sense of scale and public witness to the miraculous event. The unusual shape of the drawing suggests it was a preparatory study for a larger decorative project, possibly a stained glass window or a panel painting intended for a specific architectural space.
As a draughtsman, Blondeel often integrated elements of Italianate influence with the traditional Flemish attention to detail. This work shows his ability to manage complex groupings of figures while maintaining a clear focus on the primary action. The soft, monochromatic palette allows the viewer to concentrate on the draughtsmanship and the rhythmic flow of the lines. This piece offers a glimpse into the working methods of a sixteenth-century master, revealing the careful planning required for large-scale religious commissions of the era. The work is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a significant example of Flemish graphic art.
