A dramatic Baroque etching depicting the biblical raising of Lazarus, characterised by intense chiaroscuro and precise engraving techniques.
This print by Jacob Louÿs depicts the biblical narrative of the raising of Lazarus. The composition focuses on the moment of divine intervention, with Christ standing at the edge of the tomb, his gaze directed upward. The figure of Lazarus is represented only by his hands emerging from the dark, rectangular opening of the grave, a choice that directs the viewer's attention to the miraculous nature of the event rather than the physical body of the resurrected man.
Louÿs employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, typical of the seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. The light source emanates from Christ, casting a soft glow upon his robes and the surrounding figures, while the rest of the scene remains shrouded in deep shadow. This contrast creates a sense of solemnity and weight. The figures gathered to the left, including a woman in mourning attire, display expressions of awe and grief, their forms partially obscured by the darkness of the cavernous setting.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the engraving process, with fine lines used to model the folds of the drapery and the texture of the stone. The Latin inscription at the base provides a formal dedication, common in prints of this period, which served both as a record of the work and a gesture of respect to a patron. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of Christ countering the horizontal line of the tomb, creating a stable yet emotionally charged scene. This work reflects the period's interest in narrative clarity and the use of light to guide the viewer through complex theological subjects. The print remains a fine example of the reproductive printmaking techniques that allowed such compositions to circulate widely during the Baroque era.
