A six-panel folding screen by Shiokawa Bunrin depicting the poet Li Bo on a journey through mist-covered mountains, rendered in ink on gold-leaf paper.
Shiokawa Bunrin, a prominent figure of the Kyoto art scene during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, produced this six-panel folding screen using traditional ink wash techniques. The composition depicts the legendary Chinese poet Li Bo travelling by boat through a mountainous region, a subject frequently explored in East Asian art to evoke themes of solitude and the pursuit of natural beauty.
Bunrin employs a sophisticated use of negative space, allowing the gold-leaf background to represent mist and atmospheric depth. The craggy peaks are rendered with varied ink tones, ranging from deep, saturated blacks to subtle, diluted greys. This technique creates a sense of distance and scale, drawing the eye from the foreground boat towards the towering summits that vanish into the golden haze. The brushwork remains fluid, reflecting the artist's training in the Shijo style, which prioritised direct observation and a softer, more naturalistic approach to traditional subjects.
The screen format dictates the flow of the image, with the vertical seams acting as subtle interruptions to the continuous mountain range. Bunrin balances the heavy, textured rock formations with the delicate, rhythmic strokes used for the foliage and the gentle ripples of the water. The inclusion of the small boat provides a human element, grounding the vastness of the scene and inviting the viewer to contemplate the journey of the poet. This work demonstrates the technical precision and aesthetic sensitivity characteristic of Bunrin's later career, where he successfully integrated classical Chinese themes with the refined sensibilities of the Kyoto school. The application of gold leaf adds a reflective quality, changing the appearance of the work depending on the light in the room, which is a hallmark of high-quality Japanese screen painting.
