A detailed pen and ink study by Wolf Traut, depicting the meeting of Joachim and Anna with precise line work and careful attention to drapery.
This work by Wolf Traut depicts the meeting of Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Virgin Mary, at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. Traut, a member of the Nuremberg school and an associate of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his command of line and form in this study. The figures are rendered with a focus on the weight and fall of their heavy, voluminous garments, which create a sense of physical presence and gravity. The artist employs precise, rhythmic pen strokes to define the folds of the fabric, providing a tactile quality to the drapery that is characteristic of early sixteenth-century German graphic art.
Joachim, shown on the left with a full beard, reaches out to embrace Anna. Her posture is modest, her head covered by a veil, reflecting the traditional iconography of the period. The interaction between the two figures is quiet and restrained, avoiding theatrical gestures in favour of a more grounded, human connection. The composition is contained, focusing entirely on the figures against a neutral background, which allows the viewer to observe the technical skill involved in the cross-hatching and contour lines.
Traut was active in the circle of artists surrounding Dürer, and his work often reflects the stylistic concerns of that milieu, particularly in the treatment of human anatomy and the careful observation of naturalistic detail. This drawing provides insight into the preparatory methods of the era, where the economy of line was used to establish both the structure and the emotional tone of a scene before it was translated into larger-scale paintings or woodcuts. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency found in German Renaissance drawing, where the pen serves as the primary tool for both description and expression.
