A 1881 oil painting by Charles Angrand, depicting a young boy tending to a flock of turkeys in a bright, yellow-toned field.
Charles Angrand, a French painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1881. The painting depicts a young boy standing in a field, tasked with watching over a flock of turkeys. The composition is notable for its use of colour and light, which prefigures the artist's later interest in pointillist techniques. The ground is rendered in a bright, almost luminous yellow, created through short, distinct brushstrokes that suggest the texture of grass and earth.
In contrast to the bright field, the turkeys are painted in shades of cool blue and grey, creating a visual separation between the animals and their environment. The boy, positioned on the right side of the frame, wears a simple brown coat and a cap. His posture is relaxed, yet his attention is directed toward the flock. Angrand uses a simplified form for the figure, focusing on the silhouette and the play of light across the fabric of his clothing.
This early work demonstrates Angrand's interest in the rural life of Normandy, where he spent much of his career. The painting avoids the sentimentality often found in nineteenth-century genre scenes, opting instead for a direct observation of light and colour. The application of paint is deliberate, with the artist building the surface through a series of small, rhythmic marks. This approach creates a sense of atmosphere that is both static and observant. The work remains a clear example of the artist's transition from traditional academic training toward the scientific application of colour that would define his later contributions to the Parisian avant-garde.
