A refined nineteenth-century lithograph by Louis Hersent depicting a narrative scene from the tale of the King of Garbe.
This lithograph depicts a scene from the tale of the King of Garbe, a narrative derived from Boccaccio's Decameron. Louis Hersent, a French painter known for his historical and genre subjects, captures a moment of interaction between a male figure and two women within a rustic, barn-like setting. The composition focuses on the exchange of a small object, likely a ring or token, between the man and one of the women.
The artist employs a refined, linear style characteristic of early nineteenth-century French lithography. The figures are rendered with attention to period costume, featuring the puffed sleeves and structured garments typical of historical romanticism. The man leans casually against a wooden door frame, his posture relaxed, while the women appear in a state of modest engagement. The background, filled with hay or straw, provides a stark contrast to the formal attire of the subjects, suggesting a clandestine or humble meeting place.
Hersent was a student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and achieved success at the Paris Salon during the Bourbon Restoration. His work often leaned towards sentimental or literary themes, moving away from the rigid austerity of pure Neoclassicism toward a more accessible, narrative-driven style. This print, produced by the lithographic workshop of François Delpech, demonstrates the technical precision of the medium during its rise in popularity in France. The shading is achieved through delicate cross-hatching and stippling, creating a sense of volume in the figures and texture in the surrounding environment. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in adapting classical literature into visual form for a growing middle-class audience.
