Beskrivning

A dramatic historical scene depicting the final moments of Lady Jane Grey, rendered with the technical precision of the French Academic school.

Paul Delaroche completed this large-scale oil painting in 1833. It depicts the final moments of Lady Jane Grey, the so-called Nine Days Queen, before her beheading in the Tower of London in 1554. The composition focuses on the central figure of Jane, who is blindfolded and guided by a priest toward the execution block. Her white dress provides a stark visual contrast against the dark, sombre interior of the tower. To the left, two attendants are overcome with grief, one collapsing in despair. To the right, the executioner stands in a waiting posture, holding an axe. The straw on the floor serves as a grim reminder of the impending act.

Delaroche was a leading figure of the French Academic school, known for his ability to render historical narratives with theatrical precision. He prioritised emotional clarity and technical finish over the more expressive brushwork of his Romantic contemporaries. The lighting is carefully managed to direct the viewer's eye to the pale, vulnerable form of Jane, while the surrounding figures remain partially obscured by shadow. The painting was long considered lost after the 1928 Thames flood, but it was rediscovered in 1973 and subsequently restored. It remains one of the most recognisable examples of nineteenth-century historical drama, capturing a specific moment of political tragedy with meticulous attention to costume, texture, and human expression. The work demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing historical accuracy with a staged, almost cinematic quality that was popular in the salons of the period.

Artist Biography

Paul Delaroche

Delaroche set The Execution of Lady Jane Grey indoors for maximum drama, even though the real execution took place outdoors at the Tower of London. The model for Jane is thought to have been his mistress, an actress known as Mademoiselle Anais. The painting was lost during the Second World War and remained missing until 1973, when a Tate curator found the canvas rolled up inside another painting while sorting through damaged carpets.

He was born in 1797 in Paris and specialised in English and French history scenes because they sold well. In his own lifetime, his commercial success often exceeded both Ingres and Delacroix. Upon first seeing the daguerreotype in 1839, he reportedly declared: from today, painting is dead.

He married Louise Vernet, daughter of the painter Horace Vernet, in 1835. She was the absorbing passion of his life. She died in 1845, aged thirty-one. He sketched her on her deathbed; the drawing survives at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. He never recovered from the loss. His later work turned exclusively to religious subjects. He died in 1856.
