Beskrivning
A quiet domestic interior by French artist Édouard Vuillard. This Intimist painting uses a muted colour palette and flattened perspective to capture a private moment in a Parisian dining room.
Édouard Vuillard was a founding member of Les Nabis, a group of post-impressionist artists in late nineteenth-century France. This work, titled The Dining Room, is a characteristic example of his Intimist style. He focused on the private, domestic spaces of the Parisian middle class. He often depicted his own family and friends in these settings.
The composition is dominated by a deep, reddish-brown background. This suggests the heavy wallpaper or panelling of a bourgeois interior. A dining table occupies the lower left foreground. It is covered in a cloth rendered with broken strokes of white and cream paint. To the right, a figure sits in a high-backed chair. Their form is partially obscured by the shadows and the broad application of paint. Another figure appears on the far left, cropped by the edge of the frame.
Vuillard used a limited colour palette of earthy tones. He applied the oil paint in flat, decorative patches. This technique was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. This approach flattens the pictorial space. The figures and furniture appear as part of a single surface pattern. The atmosphere is quiet and somewhat claustrophobic. It captures a fleeting moment of domestic life without narrative drama.
The artist often painted on cardboard or small wooden panels. This choice of support allowed the matte texture of the board to show through. It contributes to the dry, fresco-like quality of the surface. By avoiding traditional perspective and clear outlines, Vuillard created a sense of psychological depth within a confined physical space. The use of cardboard as a substrate was a deliberate choice for many Nabis painters. The absorbent surface pulled the oil from the paint, leaving a flat finish. This quality suited Vuillard's interest in decorative surfaces over three-dimensional realism.

Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
