This engraving by Philips Galle depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Joshua, specifically the aftermath of the battle of Ai and the subsequent execution of Achan. Galle, a prominent figure in the Dutch printmaking tradition, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of precise, controlled lines to define both the architectural ruins and the human figures. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the background features the burning city of Ai, rendered with dramatic, swirling smoke and crumbling classical structures, while the foreground focuses on the punishment of Achan.

The artist employs a Mannerist approach to the human form, with elongated figures and dynamic, twisting poses that convey the tension of the scene. The stoning of Achan is depicted with clinical clarity, showing the figures in motion as they cast stones, while the central figure of Joshua stands in authority. The inclusion of Latin text at the bottom provides a moralising context, typical of the period, which sought to connect biblical events to contemporary ethical lessons.

Galle was known for his role as both an engraver and a publisher in Antwerp, a centre for the production of prints that circulated throughout Europe. His work often involved collaborations with other artists, such as Maerten van Heemskerck, whose influence is visible in the architectural elements and the muscular, heroic treatment of the figures. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship found in sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking, where the medium was used to disseminate complex narratives to a wide audience.
