A refined example of Northern Mannerism, this work depicts the body of Christ supported by angels, rendered with the elongated forms and dramatic light typical of Bartholomeus Spranger.
Bartholomeus Spranger, a central figure in Northern Mannerism, produced this work during his tenure at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. The composition depicts the body of Christ being held by angels, a subject often referred to as an Angel Pietà. Spranger employs the elongated proportions and complex, twisting poses characteristic of the Mannerist style, which prioritised artificial grace and emotional tension over the balanced naturalism of the High Renaissance.
The painting is executed on copper, a medium that allows for a smooth surface and high level of detail. This choice of support contributes to the luminous quality of the figures, particularly in the rendering of Christ's musculature and the soft textures of the drapery. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, punctuated by the striking red of the central angel's garment, which draws the eye to the primary interaction between the divine figures and the deceased Christ.
Spranger's training in Italy is evident in the sculptural quality of the figures and the dramatic use of light. The background, while somewhat obscured, suggests a rocky, cavernous setting that adds to the sombre atmosphere of the scene. The inclusion of putti, one of whom gathers the instruments of the Passion, provides a narrative layer that connects the immediate physical act of support to the broader theological context of the Crucifixion. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise disparate influences, including the influence of Parmigianino and the Roman school, into a distinctively refined visual language. This piece remains a representative example of the sophisticated, courtly art produced in Prague at the end of the sixteenth century, reflecting the intellectual and aesthetic preferences of the imperial circle.
