Ernst Barlach produced this lithograph as part of his series titled 'Der Totentanz' (The Dance of the Dead). Created during the First World War, the work reflects the artist's preoccupation with mortality and the human condition. Barlach, a sculptor and graphic artist, utilised the lithographic medium to achieve a stark, high-contrast aesthetic that aligns with the broader concerns of German Expressionism.

The composition depicts a skeletal figure scaling the exterior of a gothic structure. The figure is rendered with jagged, energetic lines that convey a sense of frantic movement.
