A fine mezzotint by Richard Purcell, after Gabriel Metsu, depicting a cook in a domestic kitchen setting.
This mezzotint by Richard Purcell, titled The Cook Maid, demonstrates the technical skill required for the medium during the mid-eighteenth century. Purcell, an Irish engraver active in London, produced this work after a painting by the Dutch Golden Age master Gabriel Metsu. The print depicts a young woman in a kitchen setting, engaged in the preparation of game. She holds a spit with a small bird, while a hare hangs from a hook in the background. The composition is framed by a stone archway, a common device in Dutch genre scenes of the period to create a sense of depth and domestic intimacy.
Mezzotint was a preferred method for reproducing oil paintings because it allowed for subtle gradations of tone, capturing the soft light and textures of the original canvas. Purcell translates the painterly qualities of Metsu into a monochromatic palette, focusing on the contrast between the light falling on the cook and the shadows within the hearth. The inclusion of the verse at the base of the print reflects the contemporary taste for moralising or witty commentary accompanying genre subjects. The work was published for Elizabeth Bakewell and Henry Parker, who operated from Cornhill in London, indicating the commercial nature of such prints for the burgeoning middle-class market.
This print offers a view into the domestic life and culinary practices of the era. The attention to detail, from the texture of the cook's apron to the stone masonry of the arch, provides a window into the aesthetic priorities of the time. It remains a fine example of the reproductive print trade, where European masters were made accessible to a wider audience through the labour of skilled engravers like Purcell.
