A dramatic Neoclassical depiction of the Resurrection by Benjamin West, featuring a luminous angel appearing to the women at the tomb.
Benjamin West, an American-born painter who spent the majority of his career in London, produced this work during his tenure as President of the Royal Academy. The composition depicts the biblical narrative of the Resurrection, focusing on the moment the angel appears to the women at the tomb. West employs a theatrical arrangement, placing the luminous, ethereal figure of the angel at the upper centre, which provides the primary light source for the scene. This technique creates a stark contrast against the shadowed, rocky environment of the sepulchre.
To the lower left, Roman soldiers are shown in a state of disarray and shock, their armour reflecting the celestial glow. Opposite them, the three women, often identified as the Marys, react with a mixture of awe and trepidation. West uses a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep crimson of the central woman's garment and the brilliant white of the angel's drapery. The figures are rendered with the anatomical precision characteristic of the Neoclassical period, yet the dramatic lighting and emotional intensity suggest the influence of the emerging Romantic sensibility.
West was known for his ability to organise complex multi-figure compositions, a skill he refined through his study of Old Master paintings. In this work, the diagonal lines formed by the angel's outstretched arm and the posture of the kneeling woman guide the viewer's eye across the canvas. The painting reflects the artist's interest in grand-manner history painting, a genre he helped to popularise in Britain. By focusing on the psychological reaction of the witnesses, West moves beyond a simple narrative account, inviting the viewer to consider the gravity of the event. The work remains a fine example of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century approach to religious subject matter, balancing classical restraint with dramatic narrative flair.

Benjamin West
West's The Death of General Wolfe (1770) broke a two-thousand-year convention by depicting a contemporary military event in modern dress rather than classical garb. The Royal Academy's president, Joshua Reynolds, tried to talk him out of it. The painting was a sensation, and the convention was broken for good.
He was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in 1738, a Quaker-raised boy from the colonies who became the second president of the Royal Academy in London, holding the post for twenty-eight years. He arrived in England in 1763 after studying in Italy and quickly gained the patronage of George III, serving as the king's historical painter from 1772 to 1801.
He trained a generation of American painters in London, including Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, Samuel Morse and John Trumbull. Each returned to America and shaped the new nation's visual culture. West stayed in London and died there in 1820, at eighty-one.
