A 1781 oil painting by Benjamin West documenting the visit of the Tunisian ambassador and his attendants to England.
Benjamin West, an American painter who spent much of his career in London, produced this work in 1781. It depicts the Tunisian ambassador, Sidi Mohammed el-Khemiri, alongside his entourage during their diplomatic visit to the British capital. The composition places the figures along a shoreline, with a coastal fortification visible in the distance, suggesting a point of arrival or departure.
West employs a measured, observational approach to the subjects. The ambassador stands centrally, draped in a fur-lined cloak, while his attendants are positioned around him in varied attire. The artist focuses on the specific textures of the garments, from the heavy wools and linens to the distinct headgear worn by each man. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones, muted blues, and soft ochres to define the figures against the pale, atmospheric sky.
This painting reflects the eighteenth-century interest in diplomatic exchange and the documentation of foreign visitors in London. West, who served as the second president of the Royal Academy, was known for his ability to balance historical narrative with individual portraiture. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a clear, legible arrangement that emphasises the presence of the visitors. The figures are rendered with a focus on naturalistic detail, capturing the specific features and expressions of the men. By placing them in a setting that bridges the maritime background and the foreground, West creates a sense of place that grounds the subjects in their temporary British context. The painting remains a record of a specific diplomatic encounter, captured through the lens of a painter deeply embedded in the artistic circles of the period.
