Beskrivning
A refined ink and wash figure study by French artist Roger de La Fresnaye, dated 1923, capturing a standing female nude with classical poise.
This figure study by Roger de La Fresnaye, dated 1923, demonstrates the artist's return to a more classical, representational mode during the final years of his career. While La Fresnaye is often associated with the geometric rigour of the Cubist movement, this work reveals his interest in the human form through a lens of balanced proportion and controlled line work.
The drawing features a standing female figure, rendered with ink and wash. The artist uses subtle tonal washes to define the musculature and the soft contours of the body, providing a sense of volume without relying on heavy shading. The pose is contemplative, with the figure's hand resting gently against her chest, creating a quiet, introspective mood. The line quality is precise, reflecting a disciplined approach to anatomy that contrasts with the fragmented planes seen in his earlier, more experimental compositions.
La Fresnaye's work from this period often sought a synthesis between modern sensibilities and the traditions of French classicism. By stripping away extraneous detail, he focuses the viewer's attention on the structural integrity of the figure. The composition is clean and uncluttered, allowing the economy of the mark-making to communicate the weight and presence of the subject. This piece serves as a clear example of the artist's technical proficiency in drawing, capturing a sense of stillness and grace. It is a study that values clarity and form, offering a glimpse into the artist's process as he navigated the transition between avant-garde abstraction and a renewed appreciation for the classical tradition.

Standing Female Nude - Roger de La Fresnaye
Artist Biography
Roger De La Fresnaye
He was born in Le Mans in 1885 into an aristocratic family with an ancestral chateau in Falaise. He studied at the Academie Julian, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Ranson Academy under Maurice Denis, moving from Symbolism to Cubism around 1910. He joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting alongside Duchamp, Gleizes and Metzinger at Jacques Villon's studio.
His Cubism was always temperate. He never fully embraced the radical fragmentation of Braque and Picasso, retaining naturalistic colour and recognisable forms that helped popularise the movement without terrifying bourgeois audiences. The restraint was both a strength and a limitation: it made his work accessible, but it meant that the avant-garde moved past him before the war intervened. His colour remained lyrical and warm where analytical Cubism was grey and cerebral. He came from aristocratic stock, painted with aristocratic moderation, and died too young to see whether the moderation would have held.
