A refined pair of bijin-ga panels by Tsukioka Settei, depicting traditional Japanese female figures with delicate brushwork against a gold-leaf background.
Tsukioka Settei was a prominent artist of the Ukiyo-e school, active in the Kamigata region of Japan. This work, presented as a pair of hanging scrolls or screen panels, depicts two distinct scenes of feminine grace. The left panel shows a Shirabyōshi dancer accompanied by a young servant, while the right panel features a courtesan with her girl attendant. Settei is recognised for his refined approach to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. His figures possess elongated proportions and delicate facial features, characteristic of his personal style that diverged from the more robust figures often seen in Edo-period prints.
The composition utilises a gold-leaf background, a technique that provides a sense of luxury and spatial ambiguity. The figures are rendered with fine, controlled brushwork, allowing for the careful delineation of their elaborate kimono patterns and hairstyles. The interaction between the primary figures and their attendants suggests a narrative of service and social hierarchy within the pleasure quarters of the eighteenth century. Settei avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to focus on the posture and the subtle gestures of his subjects. The colour palette remains balanced, using muted earth tones for the background to allow the pigments of the garments to emerge with clarity. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the depiction of women was not merely a record of fashion but an exploration of poise and social identity. The work remains a clear example of Settei's contribution to the development of the bijin-ga tradition in the Kansai region, demonstrating his technical precision and his ability to capture the quiet moments of his subjects.
