A realistic depiction of women gleaning potatoes in a harvested field, painted by Dutch artist Philip Sadée in 1874.
Philip Sadée, a prominent figure of the Hague School, captures a quiet moment of rural labour in this 1874 composition. The scene depicts three women from the fishing village of Scheveningen, engaged in the task of gleaning potatoes from a harvested field. Their posture and attire reflect the modest, hardworking reality of the coastal community, a subject Sadée frequently explored throughout his career.
The composition is defined by a wide, horizontal perspective that emphasises the vastness of the sandy terrain. The figures are positioned across the foreground, their forms rendered with careful attention to the textures of their traditional clothing and the simple tools they employ. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and soft greys, aligns with the atmospheric qualities often associated with the Hague School painters. The sky, overcast and expansive, contributes to the sense of isolation and quietude inherent in the scene.
Sadée avoids idealisation, choosing instead to document the daily survival of the local population. The women are shown in various stages of their work: one kneels to gather the remaining crop, another uses a spade to turn the soil, while the third stands, observing the progress. This work provides a clear view into the social history of the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century. The artist's technical precision in capturing the light and the specific textures of the dunes demonstrates his training and his dedication to the principles of realism. By focusing on the mundane activities of the working class, Sadée creates a narrative that is both grounded and observant, offering a window into a specific time and place without unnecessary embellishment.
