A detailed 1700 red chalk drawing by Herman Coets depicting the biblical creation, featuring a central sphere surrounded by cherubs and celestial light.
This red chalk drawing by Herman Coets, dated 1700, depicts the biblical narrative of the creation of the heavens and the earth. The composition is organised around a central, luminous sphere that represents the nascent world, suspended within a celestial expanse. The artist employs a classic Baroque arrangement, using a series of putti or cherubic figures to frame the central orb, guiding the viewer's eye toward the divine light emanating from the top of the frame.
At the apex, the Hebrew tetragrammaton is inscribed, signifying the presence of the Creator. Below this, a dove descends, symbolising the spirit moving over the waters. The surrounding clouds are rendered with soft, tonal transitions characteristic of the red chalk medium, which allows for a delicate interplay of light and shadow. The figures are depicted in various states of motion, their forms rounded and expressive, typical of the period's interest in dynamic, emotive religious art.
The lower margin contains an inscription in Dutch, referencing the opening verse of Genesis. This work functions as a devotional study, reflecting the theological focus of the era. The use of sanguine chalk provides a warm, monochromatic quality that unifies the complex arrangement of figures and atmospheric elements. Coets demonstrates a clear command of anatomical proportion and spatial depth, ensuring that the central sphere remains the primary focus despite the density of the surrounding cherubs. The drawing is a fine example of early eighteenth-century Dutch religious draughtsmanship, maintaining a balance between narrative clarity and decorative grace.
