This fine etching and engraving depicts a dramatic moment from Voltaire's opera, Pandore. The composition is based on a design by Hubert-François Gravelot, a figure known for his contributions to French book illustration during the eighteenth century. The print captures the mythological narrative where Prometheus brings fire to animate Pandora, a scene rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the period.
The work displays the collaborative nature of printmaking in the Enlightenment era. The inscription notes that the etching was executed by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, while the final burin work was completed by Jean Baptiste Tilliard. This division of labour allowed for a high degree of finish, seen in the delicate cross-hatching of the foliage and the subtle modelling of the figures. The scene is framed by a classical setting, with the central figure of Prometheus holding a torch aloft, his posture conveying a sense of urgency and divine intervention.
