A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Philips Galle depicting the biblical destruction of the temple by Samson.
This engraving by Philips Galle depicts the dramatic conclusion of the biblical narrative of Samson. The composition is divided into two distinct zones of action. On the left, the temple of the Philistines collapses under the immense strength of Samson, who is shown pulling down the central columns. The architectural structure is rendered with a focus on geometric precision, showing the masonry and roof beams splintering as the building falls upon the figures within. The chaos of the collapse contrasts with the foreground, where a more composed scene unfolds.
In the foreground, a figure leads a blind Samson away from the site of the destruction. This juxtaposition of the violent event and the subsequent movement of the protagonist creates a narrative sequence within a single frame. Galle employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the forms of the figures and the textures of the stone architecture. The background features a distant cityscape, providing a sense of scale and depth to the scene. The Latin inscription at the base of the print, 'Vtramq implicuit dextra lauaq columnam Sampson, et ingenti cecidit domus alta ruina', translates to 'Samson grasped one column with his right hand and the other with his left, and the high house fell in a great ruin'.
Philips Galle was a prolific engraver and publisher based in Antwerp. His work was instrumental in disseminating the designs of other artists, such as Maarten van Heemskerck, whose influence is evident in the classical architectural elements and the muscular treatment of the figures. This print reflects the technical mastery of the Dutch printmaking tradition, where clarity of line and narrative legibility were prioritised. The work serves as a fine example of sixteenth-century graphic art, capturing a moment of biblical drama through the disciplined medium of the copperplate engraving.
