A detailed 19th-century engraving by Heinrich Nüsser, depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child, based on a composition by Hans Memling.
This engraving by Heinrich Nüsser depicts the traditional iconography of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a turbulent river. The composition is based on an earlier painting by Hans Memling, as indicated by the inscription 'Joh. Hemling pinx' at the base of the print. Nüsser, a skilled engraver associated with the Düsseldorf School, employs precise line work to render the textures of the saint's heavy drapery and the churning water around his legs.
The scene is framed by steep, rocky cliffs that create a narrow passage for the figures. In the distance, a calm horizon line provides a contrast to the immediate action in the foreground. The Christ Child sits securely on the saint's shoulder, his hand raised in a gesture of benediction. The engraving technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the rock formations to the lighter, atmospheric treatment of the sky and the reflection of the sun on the water surface.
This print was produced for the 'Verein zur Verbreitung religiöser Bilder in Düsseldorf', an organisation dedicated to the dissemination of religious imagery during the nineteenth century. Such prints were intended to bring classical and Renaissance compositions to a wider audience through the medium of reproductive engraving. The work reflects the period's interest in historical styles and the technical proficiency of German printmakers who sought to translate the colour and depth of oil paintings into the monochromatic language of the burin. The attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of the saint's musculature and the ripples of the river, demonstrates the technical rigour expected of the Düsseldorf School during this era.
