A 1984 work by Roy Lichtenstein that parodies the gestural style of Abstract Expressionism through bold, sweeping brushstrokes and a primary colour palette.
Roy Lichtenstein is widely recognised for his systematic use of Ben-Day dots and comic-book aesthetics. However, his later career included a series of works that engaged with the gestural language of Abstract Expressionism. Sailboats through the trees, produced in 1984, demonstrates this shift. Rather than the mechanical precision of his earlier commercial-style works, this piece employs broad, sweeping brushstrokes that mimic the spontaneous energy of painters like Willem de Kooning.
The composition is fragmented, with vertical lines suggesting tree trunks that obscure the view of the water. The sailboats themselves are reduced to minimal, schematic forms, barely discernible against the energetic application of paint. Lichtenstein uses a palette of primary colours, including yellow, blue, and green, set against a cream background. This choice of colour maintains a connection to his earlier Pop sensibilities, even as the application of paint becomes more fluid and painterly.
By adopting the visual vocabulary of Abstract Expressionism, Lichtenstein creates a dialogue between the high-art tradition of the gesture and his own history of mechanical reproduction. The work functions as a parody of the emotional intensity associated with the New York School. It is a calculated performance of spontaneity, where the artist uses his signature precision to replicate the appearance of a rapid, uninhibited painting style. The result is a work that questions the authenticity of the artist's mark, inviting the viewer to consider the distance between the act of painting and the representation of that act. This piece is a clear example of Lichtenstein's ability to deconstruct art-historical styles through his own unique lens, maintaining a critical distance while exploring new modes of visual expression.
