A monochromatic ink and wash study of cattle by a river, capturing the atmospheric quality of the Dutch countryside in the style of the Hague School.
This monochromatic work by Johannes Hubertus Leonardus de Haas captures a quiet moment in the Dutch countryside. The composition focuses on a cow standing near a riverbank, with a second animal resting in the foreground. The artist employs a wash technique to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the lowlands, where light filters through a hazy sky to soften the horizon line. A small boat is visible on the water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the rural setting.
De Haas was a member of the Hague School, a group of artists known for their interest in the tonal qualities of the Dutch environment. Unlike the bright palettes of earlier periods, this work relies on a restricted range of sepia and grey tones to convey mood and texture. The application of ink wash allows for subtle gradations, particularly in the rendering of the water and the distant bank. The foreground is handled with more direct, darker strokes, which ground the figures of the cattle and create a sense of depth.
This piece reflects the artist's focus on animal subjects, a recurring theme throughout his career. His ability to observe the anatomy and posture of cattle is evident here, as the animals appear naturalistic and integrated into their surroundings. The work avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to capture the essence of the scene through light and shadow. It is a study of the quietude found in the Dutch river regions, presented with a technical restraint that characterises the period's approach to drawing and wash media. The print captures these delicate tonal shifts, making it a suitable addition for those interested in nineteenth-century Dutch art and the development of tonalism.
