A detailed 1769 engraving by John Hall, depicting the historical narrative of the infant Pyrrhus seeking sanctuary with King Glaucias.
This engraving by John Hall, published in 1769, reproduces a history painting by Benjamin West. The scene depicts a narrative from Plutarch, where the infant Pyrrhus is presented to Glaucias, the king of Illyria, to seek sanctuary. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century history painting, prioritising clear narrative action and classical architectural settings.
In the centre, the young child reaches towards the seated monarch, Glaucias, who appears contemplative. Surrounding them are various figures, including attendants and soldiers, whose gestures and postures direct the viewer's attention to the central interaction. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, while the draped garments and Roman-inspired surroundings reflect the period's interest in antiquity. John Hall, a skilled engraver, captures the textures of the fabric and the musculature of the figures through precise line work and cross-hatching. This print was part of a broader effort to disseminate classical and historical subjects to a wider audience through the medium of high-quality engraving.
The work demonstrates the collaborative nature of the art market during the Georgian era, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to produce prints for collectors. The architectural elements, such as the columns and the vaulted ceiling, provide a formal backdrop that balances the emotional weight of the scene. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, a common technique in Neoclassical art to maintain order and clarity. This piece offers an insight into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where historical narratives were used to explore themes of duty, protection, and political legitimacy. The print remains a record of the original painting by West, preserving the composition for study and appreciation.
