A traditional Japanese woodblock triptych by Kikugawa Eizan, depicting a formal procession of women and a seated beauty in a palanquin.
This triptych by Kikugawa Eizan depicts a procession of women, a common subject within the bijin-ga genre of Ukiyo-e prints. Eizan, a student of the Kano school before turning to printmaking, was active during the early nineteenth century. His work often focused on the idealised beauty of women in Edo-period Japan, frequently portraying courtesans or women of high status in elaborate attire.
The composition spans three sheets, creating a continuous narrative flow. The central figure is seated within a palanquin, a traditional enclosed carriage used for transport. She is surrounded by attendants who carry parasols and personal effects, suggesting a formal outing or a ceremonial movement. The figures wear patterned kimonos, with the artist employing a variety of line weights to define the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the faces. The background remains relatively sparse, using architectural elements and stylised pine branches to suggest an outdoor setting without overwhelming the primary subjects.
Eizan utilised a balanced colour palette, relying on soft earth tones, muted blues, and subtle pinks. The printing process involves multiple woodblocks, each applying a specific colour to the paper. The result is a flat, graphic quality characteristic of the period. The figures are arranged in a decorative manner, prioritising the elegance of their posture and the patterns of their clothing over realistic spatial depth. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where the grace of the female form and the sophistication of textile design were central to the visual culture of the floating world.
